In the first part the course offers a general introduction to the social history; in the second one it analyzes the construction of national identities and political religions in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Students who attend classes must study a book of the group A and one from group B. It is also request an oral report on a second book chosen from the group B. This report will be presented as a seminar activity in the second part of the course.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course students will have acquired a knowledge of social history, its methods and some of his fields of study (historical demography, family, the environment, social classes and professions, collective behavior, etc.. ). They will also have acquired specific knowledge about the relationship between social and political history, and in particular on the processes of formation of national identities and civil and political religions in the contemporary age.

Type of Assessment
The final exam will be oral and it will focus on recommended readings. For attending students will be provided oral or written exercises that form part of the final evaluation.
Course program
The course is divided into two parts. In the first it is offered a general introduction to the social history, its sources, its methods, its main areas of research (historical demography, family history, the relationship between history and the environment, the history of social classes, the historical analysis of the socio-professional stratification, collective behavior and social conflict as a problem of historiography, etc..). The second one is devoted to the question of the construction of national identities and political religions in contemporary times, with the possible opportunity to have, in relation to the number of attending students, seminars and other activities.
