LM IN SOCIOLOGIA E RICERCA SOCIALE (6 Cfu)
Attending students are required to study the notes taken in class and the material indicated by the instructors, relative to the first and second modules.
For non-attending students: a book chosen from those indicated in the first module; the texts of the second module (Paolini and Cavallo).
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course the students will have acquired a knowledge of social history, its methodologies and some of its fields of study. They will also have acquired specific and more in-depth skills in: the relationship between social and political history; the processes of formation of national identities and civil religions; the persistence of phenomena of the ancient regime (such as the duel) and their changes in the contemporary age; the use of cinema as a historical source.
Type of Assessment
Learning will be assessed via the traditional oral exam with questions aimed at assessing the preparation of the students according to the modalities indicated in the point "Testi di riferimento". For attending students, a part of the final exam can be replaced by an in-class assessment to be carried out in the form of an oral presentation (by power point) of a text or a topic approved by the instructors.
Course program
The course is divided into three modules. The first offers a general introduction to social history, its sources, and the main areas of research and methodologies (historical demography; history of the family; the relationship between history and the environment; the dynamics of social classes and the historical analysis of socio-professional stratifications; collective behavior and social conflict as a historiographical problem). The second module, held by prof. Paolini, is monographic in nature and will address two case studies: the history of the duel, as a social and cultural phenomenon, in Italy between the 1800s and the 1900s; cinema as a source for a historical period and the possibility of using cinema to reconstruct the feelings of the spectators and the dominant climate in a given epoch. The third module, also held by prof. Paolini, is dedicated to the seminar activities of the students enrolled, who will research and present on texts or topics agreed upon with the two instructors.
